NCA Registration Categories Explained for Property Owners

Understanding NCA contractor categories helps you choose the right builder for your project.

The National Construction Authority (NCA) classifies contractors into 8 categories based on their capacity and experience. Here is what each category means for your construction project.

Category Breakdown

  • Category 1: Large-scale civil works (roads, dams, bridges) — unlimited contract value
  • Category 2: Major building works — unlimited contract value
  • Category 3: Medium to large buildings — up to KES 500 million
  • Category 4: Medium buildings — up to KES 200 million
  • Category 5: Small to medium buildings — up to KES 100 million
  • Category 6: Minor works — up to KES 50 million
  • Category 7: Specialist trades (interior finishing, aluminum works, etc.) — up to KES 50 million
  • Category 8: Trade-specific works — up to KES 20 million

Why Category 7 Matters

Roshem Construction is NCA Category 7 certified (Reg. No. 84797/B/0524). This means we are qualified for specialist construction and interior finishing works up to KES 50 million. It also means:

  • Verified technical capacity
  • Proven project track record
  • Compliance with NCA standards
  • Regular authority inspections

How to Verify a Contractor

Always check the NCA register before engaging a contractor. Ask for their NCA registration number and verify it online at the NCA website. This simple step protects your investment.

The Risks of Unregistered Contractors

  • No quality assurance
  • No legal recourse for defects
  • Potential insurance void
  • Possible project shutdown by authorities
